It's hard to find any information about this place. We found it in one of our Maui hiking books many years ago. The trailhead is at the end of Kulike Rd. We call this Hale Haku heiau trail. The trail leads out to a viewpoint overlooking Pilali bay. From the overlook, retrace your steps about 20 feet to start the trail that leads downhill to the ocean and the heiau. This is a pristine place. You will cross a river and then follow the trail alongside the rocky beach. Smooth, round rocks (pohaku) are everywhere. The heiau is tucked into the trees and the ferns. It a bit hard to find because it looks like a pile of rocks. But you will see a structured rock wall on the right before the trail starts to climb again. This is the heiau...we think. There are no signs. However, when you first enter the trail you will see colorful signs asking you to tread lightly and malama da aina (take care of the land). In August there were lots of mosquitos. Bring bug spray. The trail is steep and slippery at some points and you will cross a stream. Do not go after, or during, a rain as it may be flooded. Wear sturdy shoes.
Here is a bit more info from Maui Hikes: Hike to Pilale Bay down a steep slope to explore Halehaku stream, Halehaku Heiau and remains of a Hawaiian settlement. Pilale Bay Historical Hike. Peaceful, scenic, historically significant bay overlooked by Halehaku Heiau. Short hike, one steep section. Explore the bay and streams that surround the ancient Hawaiian village of Halehaku.
