Sugar Beach 🏖

Another favorite beach. This is part of a 3 mile stretch of beach from Ma'alea to Kihei. If you start at the Ma'alea end, look for the sacred pohaku (stones) at the upper entrance to the harbor next to a defunct restaurant. These two large stones are considered powerful and sacred. Sugar Beach is sunny, hot and can be very, very windy. The wind kicks up in the late morning and early afternoon along the middle stretch of the beach. If it's a windy day, you will have the entire beach to yourself. Spend some time in the water and take a walk along the beach and then head out.

You can park alongside the highway and you will be just a few steps away from the beach. This beach has views of Kahoolawe, an outer island that was previously used for military exercises and is currently being restored. Kealia Pond and coastal boardwalk is nearby with a beautiful walk through the marsh. The small parking lot for Kealia Pond fills up quickly, so it is best to arrive in the early morning on a weekday. The boardwalk pathway has many offshoot entrances to the beach.
