The famous Lahaina banyan tree covers an entire city block and is said to be the largest banyan tree in the US. One quarter of a mile in circumference, its octopus-like limbs stretch outward, spreading a vast network of branches, leaves and aerial roots towards the streets and buildings surrounding it. Extraordinary, almost surreal, it seems more like a fantastic prop from a Tim Burton film than a organism in real life.
It's located on the corner of Front Street and Canal Street in Lahaina town. There are many benches to sit down in the shade of this giant tree. It's within walking distance of some of the world's best art galleries and many restaurants and cafes. It's also very close to the harbor. If you are taking the ferry from Lahaina to Lanai island be sure to walk over and see this tree. It is opposite from the public restrooms near the ferry.
When we visit Lahaina we park nearby (off Canal Street) so that we can start and end our visit to Lahaina with some time under this banyan tree.
