Kanaha Pond 🦆

This is a quiet spot in the middle of Maui's busiest town, Kahului. If you are a bird lover or a preservation enthusiast you will enjoy Kanaha Pond Wildlife Sanctuary. It is a delightful surprise right in the center of busy Kahului. We sometimes stop here on the way back from running errands in town. We pick up lunch from one of the local health food stores - Alive and Well (delicious sandwiches and fresh juices) or Down to Earth (great salad bar). Kanaha Pond is about a mile from either health food store. We sit in the observation deck to quietly enjoy lunch in this peaceful spot. Kanaha is a refuge for native birds. It is an expansive and shallow pond which changes color based on the sun, the wind and the clouds. It can change from bright green, to almost white, to a spooky yellow and sometimes it is just a dull gray. When you enter be sure to close the gate behind you. This is a fragile, protected environment that nourishes and protects some of Hawaii's most beautiful and delicate wildlife. Be respectful and quiet so you do not disturb the birds.
