Lahaina is full of culture and history because it was once the capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii from from 1820 to 1845. LÄ hainÄ means "cruel sun", describing the sunny, dry, hot climate. There are many information signs posted along Front street that describe some of the history of Lahaina. A good place to start is the parking lot across from Kamehameha Iki Park. Within the park are many informational signs and directly across the street from the park is Moku'ula Island and Mokuhinia Pond. However, today this area has no pond and no island. A restoration and archaeology project is underway to protect and restore this cultural heritage site that was once the primary home of Hawaiian royalty. As you continue walking down Front St you will pass Banyan tree park with one of the world's largest Banyan trees. Then the hustle and bustle of Lahaina really begins with endless shops and restaurants. Today we stopped for lunch, then headed to Jodo Mission and Baby Beach. The Jodo mission has a huge Buddha statue on beautifully maintained grounds. Baby Beach is a few steps away from Jodo Mission. It is very popular on the weekends and has great views of neighboring island Molokai.
