Halehaku Heiau in Haiku 🙌

Halehaku Heiau in Haiku. Who knew?

We never heard of a heiau in Haiku until we found the Halehaku heiau in the Maui Trailblazer book. We looked for information online but found nothing. This is a hidden gem at the end of Kulike Road. It's a short, but adventurous and steep trail that starts off with a spectacular view of Pilale bay and a beach filled with smooth round boulders. After taking in the dramatic view from the point, head back up the trail about 50 feet and take a left to head down to the river. After a brief hike on a narrow trail with an unbroken canopy of trees, take a left to head down a steep rocky slope to the river. The trail is not very clear and there are two choices (in case you miss the first), but they both lead to the river which is your next step. When we visited there were red ribbons tied off to mark the juncture of the trail near the river. Do not attempt this hike after a rain since the river will be flooded, or subject to flash floods. Once you reach the river cross to the other side (it's possible to cross over the rocks, but it is slippery and your feet will get wet) and had towards the ocean where the trail to the heiau picks up. At the mouth of the river is a rocky beach. Stay right and head through a lush layer of solid green ground cover. You will soon find the heiau on your right under a canopy of trees. Remember to practice respect for this place and malama da aina (take care of the land).
