La Perouse is a dramatic landscape with jagged black lava (a'a), sparkling blue water and bright sandy beaches. The contrast of the jagged black lava fields against the green foothills of Mt Haleakala and the blue sky is exquisite. Today we discovered a surprising new feature in the landscape - feral goats. They weren't here last time we visited about a year ago. The park service recently installed brand new signs at the entrance as well as signs to protect the cultural areas which consist of rock walls and enclosures. The parking lot is now paved - lots of changes! Ahihi Kina'u is a protected natural area reserve and a marine conservation district that is famous for snorkeling. Close to the entrance there are protected lava rock walls that mark ancient dwellings.
