Grant us spiritual energy.
Upcountry, on the North Shore in Haiku town, the Valley Isle Memorial cemetery is a quiet meditative place to view the sun rising behind Haleakala or the setting into the ocean. It is located just before the turn off for Jaws, the 60 foot wave that requires perfect conditions and happens for a short duration per year.
The burial of the deceased was considered a planting, "kanu" by traditional Native Hawaiians and was followed by physical and spiritual growth.
Today, the respectful tributes to ancestors include flowers, leis, messages and vases. Ilina kumu, burial grounds, are often simple in design, and located in beautiful and inspiring locations. They are immaculate and cherished by local islanders who come to pay respects to their predecessors. Should you visit one, simply take in the beauty and feel reverence for the iwi, the bones of beloved ancestors, and 'uhane, the spirit of the beloved.
E ho mai ka mana. Grant us spiritual energy.
