From where we live upcountry in Haiku we can see Kahakuloa off in the distance across the isthmus of Central Maui. Kahakuloa is a very distinct and easily identified peak. It is definitely a power spot but it is not easy to reach. It requires driving along a narrow one lane highway full of blind turns and sheer cliffs. It takes about an hour to get from Haiku to Kahakuloa. Kahekili Highway, State Highway 340, is known as a scary and dangerous highway - if it is raining or has been raining, skip this road due to mud and rock slides. There is little room for error on this road. On this journey there are many times we had to stop and back up to let oncoming traffic pass. Backing up on this narrow road on the side of a sheer cliff is pretty scary! Kahakuloa has dramatic peaks with endless views out to the vast expanse of dark blue ocean. From the small parking area, if you go right you can hike a short distance on a clear path to Kahakaloa Point itself. If you go left you can hike a short distance to some craggy rock scapes including the eye of Kahakuloa. Wear sturdy hiking shoes as the trail is rugged and the landscape is covered in lantana, an invasive weed, that sticks to your shoes and clothing.
