Today we visited the river at Iao Valley and took a closer look at the Kepaniwai plaque marking the site of the Battle of Iao Valley. It features a striking relief of Kamehameha's warriors rowing their canoe across the channel to fight the warriors on Maui.

The Battle of Kepaniwai ("Battle of the Dammed Waters of Ê»ÄȘao" or KaÊ»uwaÊ»upali, "Battle of the Clawed Cliffs") was fought in 1790 between HawaiÊ»i Island and Maui. The forces of HawaiÊ»i were led by Kamehameha I, while the forces of Maui were led by KalanikĆ«pule. It is known as one of the most bitter battles fought in Hawaiian history.
